In the township the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The population density was 44.9 inhabitants per square mile (17.3/km 2 ). Unincorporated communities in the township include Valier, Fordham, Hamilton, Frostburg, and Grange. Mahoning Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Allegheny River, runs through the southern part of the township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 28.7 square miles (74.4 km 2 ), of which 28.4 square miles (73.6 km 2 ) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km 2 ), or 1.05%, are water. The township is in southern Jefferson County and is bordered to the south by Indiana County. It was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. The population was 1,247 at the 2020 census.
